Private services for James R. Reed, age 81 a residence of the United Helpers Nursing Home and formerly of Oak Point, will be held at the convenience of his close friends. There will be no calling hours. James passed away Sunday (June 20, 2010). Arrangements are with the Fox & Murray Funeral Home.
Surviving are his friends Patty & Bruce Matthews, Nancy Seeley, Bill & Carol Freeman, Stephen & Lisa Sarfaty all of Oak Point and Constance Denny of Ogdensburg.
A sister Deette (Reed) Richardson and special friend Miriam Preston predeceased him.
James was born on February 20, 1929 in New York (Kings) NY, a son of Morley P. & Viola (Tulley) Reed. He graduated from Monticello High School in 1946 and continued his education at St. Lawrence University in Canton, NY where he received a bachelor’s degree in Biology. In 1951 he enlisted in the US Army serving in Alabama, Georgia, Korea, Japan, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York and Kentucky until 1958 when he honorably discharged as a Sergeant in the Company E 1st Airborne Battle Group 501st Infantry. He then began his teaching career at North High School in Syracuse where he worked for a year, and then transferred to the Gillette Road Middle School in 1965 and taught 7th & 8th grade science until 1985 when he retired and relocated to Oak Point.
He enjoyed sailing, canoeing, rowing his St. Lawrence skiff, scuba diving, wild life, physics, reading, math and military history. James supported numerous charities during the course of his lifetime, and was a very generous and intelligent person.
Memorial contributions have been requested to The Hammond Public Library.
